How to configure a connection to a virtual private network (VPN) in Windows NT

You need to have Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0 Release installed on your computer.

Click "Start", point to "Settings" and then click"Control Panel". Make doubleclick on the "Network" icon.

Click on the "Protocols" tab and press "Add".

In "Select Network Protocol" dialog box select "Point To Point Tunneling Protocol". Click "Ok" button.

Click "Continue" in the "Windows NT Setup" dialog box. Insert the Windows NT original CD in your CD drive if the files are not on your hard disk (/i386 directory must be loaded on a local drive).

The PPTP files will be copied and the PPTP Configuration dialog box will appear as shown below.
Click the "Number of Virtual Private Networks" drop-down arrow to choose the number of VPN-connections you want. Then click "Ok".

When you get the following message click "Ok" button.

Click "Add" in the "Remote Access Setup" dialog box.

Click the "RAS Capable Devices" drop-down arrow and select "VPN1-RASPPTPM". Then click "Ok" button.

In the "Remote Access Setup" dialog box select "VPN1" port and click "Configue" button.

Verify that the "Dial out only" option in the "Port Usage" dialog box is the only option selected, and then click "Ok".

In the "Remote Access Setup" dialog box ensure that the "VPN1" port is selected and click on "Network" button. Verify that TCP/IP is the only option checked under "Dial out Protocols". Click "Ok".

In the "Remote Access Setup" dialog box click on "Continue" button.

In the "Network" window in "Protocols" tab you will see the "Point To Point Tunneling Protocol" is now installed.

Reboot the computer.

Run NT Service Pack 6a. Service Pack 6a must be installed/reinstalled after the PPTP installation. This must be done even if 6a was previously installed!

Click "Start", point to "Programs", choose "Accessories" and click on "Dial-Up Networking".

If you have never configured Dail-Up Networking, you will see:

Click "Ok".

In the "Dail-Up Networking" window select "New".

Provide a name for the new connection and click "Next" button.

In the "Server" window check only "I am calling the Internet" box. Click "Next".

In the "Modem or Adapter" dialog box in the "Select the modem or adapter this entry will use" list select "RASPPTPM(VPN1)" item. Click "Next".

In the "Phone number" field type the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the computer that you want to connect to (you received in registration e-mail).

Click "Next" and then "Finish".

In the "Dial-Up Networking" window select "VPN" in the "Phonebook entry to dial" pull-down menu and click on "More". Select "Edit entry and modem properties".

Verify the following configuration of options:

"Basic" tab:

Make sure that "RASPPTPM(VPN1)" is selected as the "Dial using" item.

"Server" tab:


Set all parameters as it shown above and click "TCP/IP Settings".

Make sure that all parameters of TCP/IP are set as shown below. Then click "Ok".

"Security" tab:

Set all parameters as follow.

Press "Ok" and close the dialog window.

To use the connection, follow these steps:

Ensure you're connected to the internet.

Once you are connected to your ISP doubleclick on VPN icon in "Dial-Up Networking" window. Click "Dial".

In the "Connect to" window type your user name and password (you have got in your registration e-mail). If you want your computer automatically save your login information for next session, set the "Save password" item.
Leave the "Domain" empty, and then click "Ok".

If you get the following message, you will have to reinstall Service Pack 6a and reboot the system.

Notice1: To provide high-level 128-bit data encrypting we recommend you to download and install the High Encryption version for Service Pack 6a.
Before you try to obtain or install High Encryption version, verify which platform your computer based on:
Intel (x86) Dec Alpha

Notice2: 128-bit encryption is included in the latest versions of the Internet Explorer browser (5.5 and later). If you are running an earlier version of Internet Explorer without 128-bit encryption, you can download the latest version of Internet Explorer from the Internet Explorer Downloads page or upgrade your present browser with the Internet Explorer High Encryption Pack. It will allow to avoid any conflicts of enciphering modes of Internet Explorer and Windows.
